NSS

I. INTRODUCTION

• The National Service Scheme is a voluntary and value based student youth programme being operated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It was launched on 24th September 1969, during the Mahatma Gandhi’s Birth Centenary Celebrations.
• 1969-70 the Karnatak University started NSS programme and at present it covers 7 districts, 170 Colleges and 15,500 volunteers.
• The NSS unit was started in our College in the year 2007 with a strength of 100 volunteers.

II. AIM

• The overall aim of National Service Scheme as envisaged earlier, is to give an extension dimension to the higher education system and orient the students youth to community service while they are studying in educational institution.

III. OBJECTIVES

The Broad Objectives of NSS are to:-

• Understand the community in which they work:
• Understand themselves in relation to their community.
• Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problems solving process;
• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
• Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
• Develop competence required to group-living and sharing of responsibilities;
• Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
• Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and Practice national integration and social harmony.

IV. THE MOTTO

• The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self less service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, the aim of the NSS is to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programs and activities.

V. NSS SYMBOL

• The Symbol of the National Service Scheme, as appearing on the cover page of this Manual is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa. This giant wheel of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of the creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, as simplified form of the sun chariot wheel primarily depicts the movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

VI. NSS BADGE

• The NSS Symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Konak wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence the, badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

VII. NSS ACTIVITIES

NSS activities are divided in to two types:

• Regular NSS activities and
• The Special Camping Programme

VIII. CONDITIONS FOR NSS VOLUNTEERS:

• Every volunteer must complete 240 hours during 2 years period and attend one special camp to be eligible for 2 years completion certificate issued by the Vice-Chancellor.

IX. ACTIVITIES OF NSS UNIT IN THE COLLEGE

In our College NSS was established on 24th September 2007. The eminent professors who have worked as NSS Programme Officers are:

25/02/2014 :          An awareness programme on The Epidemic of Immorality and Pronography by RESCUE an NGO wherein the Chief Guest Mr. Abhishek Clifford delivered a lecture on “MTP”.

C) RED RIBBON CLUB: This club is active through NSS dept. wherein during camps villagers are benefitted by an awareness programmes as to health, HIV / AIDS, child and women health etc.

D) VALUE BASED EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ORIENTATION:

1. Through NSS activities students are trained for the importance of values in their life by the celebration of Communal Harmony Day, Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Kanakdas Jayanti, Valmiki Jayanti regularly in the College.
2. Students are trained for Community Orientation by serving the society through NSS camps.

X. FACILITIES FOR NSS VOLUNTEERS

• 5% Seat is reserved for Higher Education i.e. LL.M., M.A., M.Sc, M.Com, M.S.W, B.Ed etc.
• The special weightage at the time of selection to the posts in Women and Child Welfar
• Department and Social Welfare Department etc.
